TOTALISATOR ODDS

ALLEGED BREACH OF ACT

PRINTING OF DOCUMENTS

(Per Press Association.)

WELLINGTON, February 24. In the Court to-day, Carl Petersen Lindergreen, secretary of the Dominion Sportsmen's Association, was charged with having had printed documents containing statements as to the dividends *>aid at the Palmerston North races" on December 29 and 30, with the object of assisting and counselling Alfred George Clements, of Nelson, to make bets at totalisatcr odds).

Chief-Detective Kemp said that Lindergreen, as secretary of the D.S.A., wrote to Clements enclosing a prospectus and offering to supply " all information which his business would warrant," and had admitted supplying details of race meetings to Clements. Defendant had stated that about 218 of the 500 or 600 bookmakers were members of the association. Overwhelming evidence would be put in to show that Clements had been engaged in the conduct of a common gaming house.

Detective Cameron stated that defendant, when asked if persons other than bookmakers were members of the D.S.A., replied that 218 out of the 400 or 600 bookmakers were members. He did not say there wore from 4000 to 6000 members. Witness had seen letters from defendant to Clements warning Clements not to take risks with strangero, not to accept business at certain times as it was dangerous, and to destroy all letters and wires after noting the contents.

Detective Nuttall. in evidence, said his impression of Lindergreen's statement as to membership was that there were 218 bookmakers out of 4000 or 6000 members.

The cace was adjourned till tomorrow.
