The House of Lords read for the second time the Merchant Shipping Bill, giving effect to a number of draft conventions at the Washington Labour Conference, 1920, laying down the minimum age for employment as trimmers and stokers, and compensating seamen who lose their employment through the foundering of ships. Lord Merrivale urged that legislative effect be dclaved until the other signatories to the * convention had taken similar action. . Viscount Peel promised to convey the suggestion to the Board of Trade.
