METHVEN. . Several changes in the personnel of the staff of the local post office have been made, and will take effect as from the end of the present month. Mr S. L. V. Timms, exchange clerk, has received notice of transfer to the Amberley Post Office ; Mr A. G. Osborn, messenger, is to be exchange clerk. Mr Arnold Burrows has been appointed messenger at Methven. At the weekly shoot of the Methven Club a sweepstake was held. The following tied with scores totalling 35, with handicaps in parentheses: Nicholls 34 (1), McAnulty 34(2), J. E. Carr 33 (2), Haskett 32 (3), W. Jackson 29 (6). The shoot-off has not yet been completed. . The hotty button provided another keen contest. Gf. H. Nicholls and J. E. Can 1 tied with possibles. In the shoot-off they again tied with 32. Other scores in the competition were: Waddington 34, McAnulty 34, Holland 34, Haskett 32, Wightman 32, Manning 31. Mr J. McKay, of the local post office staff, was given a. hearty send-off by his fellow-employees on Wednesday prior to his departure to take ut> a position in the General Post Office, Christchurch. The Postmaster (Mr S. Buckett), in presenting Mr McKay with a safety razor, spoke in eulogistic terms of the departing officer’s popularity and general efficiency. Mr McKay suitably responded, and expressed regret at leaving the Methven office.

Mr J. T. Aicken, of Methven, underwent an operation to his leg in the Christchurch Hospital recently, and is reported to he progressing favourably. A commencement has been made on the wiring of the Railway Department’s dwellings for the electric current. It is understood that the lighting of the railway yards and station by electricity will not be commenced till a later date.

The bachelors of Methven have called a meeting to discuss arrangements for their annual hall. The Benedicts are having their annual meeting on Tuesday, July 29, in the A. and P. rooms.

RAKASA. At a meeting of the committee of the Rakaia Football Club, Mr C. Evison presided over a good attendance. The Ashburton Sub-Union wrote agreeing to regrade two players from senior to junior. Word was also received of the closing of the fourth-grade competition. For the seven-a-side tournament in. Ashburton next Saturday, it was agreed to enter the following teams: —One senior, three junior, two third-grade, and one fourth-grade. W. MacDonald and R. Tatterson are among those selected to represent Ashburton against Ellesmere. That the progressive euchre tournaments of the Rakaia Football Club are increasing in popularity was shown on the last occasion, when all who wished to play could not be' accommodated lor lack of room. The ladies’ prize was won by Mrs Tatterson, after a tie with Miss F. Cornelius, and the gentlemen s by Mr Paton. Consolation prizes were awarded to Miss C. Shannon and Mr A. Harvey.

MOUNT SOMFRS. Menders of the Methven Rifle Club journeyed to Mount Somers on lhuxsdav evening and shot off a match SJTU club. A shoot was also held for the County Shield competition, when the visitors won by SM to 295. The visitors were also victorious in a team match of 14, then scores being 426 to 368. Following are —Manning 34, Anderson 33, Waddington 33, HasEett 32 McAnulty Q 9 Oarr 32 Painter 31, Allen 30, M. Wightman 28, Hands 27 J. Wightman 27, Jackson 27, S. Wightman 25. Mount Somers. —L. G.
