SOCCER FOOTBALL.
CHINESE (0) v. POVERTY BAY (0). GISBORNE, July 25. The Chinese team arrived in Gisborne last night overland from Napier, and %vero entertained by the local Chinese Association. This morning the
visitors were accorded a civic reception, and in the afternoon met Poverty Bay on the Reserve, before an attendance of 5000 people. The weather was dull and threateniiig. The game was a brilliant exposition of football, and will prove a great uplift to " Soccer" in Poverty Bay. The combination of the visitors was much superior to that of the local men, and but for tho good w nrk of the backs, especially Roots, who was supnorted by Hanna and McKay, the visitors would have scored on peroral occasions. In the Chinese? forward line Chang Wu Ting and Lowe gave a great display, and among the outstanding players was Liang, left back, and Wang, centre forward. The game ended in a draw, neither side scoring. In the evening the visitors wore the guests at a very hirgely-attended caba'ret. They leave overh nd on Sunday for the south.
