TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO.

(From the "Guardian," July 26, 1899.)

Druids' Ball and Social.—The committee of the Lodge of Druids gave a successful ball and social in the Orange Hall. The opening musical ceremony of the Order having been gone through, the ball was opened, Mrs Scrint and Messrs William McCaueland, Duncan Leitch, Past District President Pearson, and H. Stephenson supplying the music. At a later period of the evening Worthy Arch-Druid Higgins thanked all for their attendance. Songs were given by Sister Gobbe and by Messrs Brooking, Higgins, Chalmers, Jamieson, Pearson, and Pickford; Miss Taylor gave two well-executed recitations. Mr Marsden supplemented the entertainment by gramophone selections.

Grand National Meeting.—The folloAving acceptances have been received for the New Zealand Grand National meeting at Christchurch :—Grand National Steeplechase, of 650 sovs; 3} miles —Dummy 12.9, Morag 11.1, Muscatel 11.0, Kanaka 10.13, Kuku 10.10, Ruby 10.8, Blackberry 10.6, Tally-ho 10.0, Powder Monkey 9.9, Venture 9.8, Tekoo 9.7. Grand National Hurdle Race, of 500 sovs; two miles —Social Pest 12.11, Dummy 11.11, Ilex 11.5, Marina 11.2, Defiance 11.0, Umslopogaas 10.9, Torpina 10.9, Troubadour 10.6, Windermere. 10.5, Dundee 10.0, Kuku 9-10, Straybird 9.9, Daphne 9.5, 'Deny 9.0, The Weaver 9.0, Popgun 9.0. Chess. —The second round of the. chess tournament was concluded last evening. Mr Dodds leads with six wins, Dr. Hunter five wins, Messrs G. Friedlander, F. Clark, and V. Steward three wins each. Board of Education. —So far six nominations have been received to fill the vacancy on the Board of Education caused by Mr Alfred Saunders's retirement. They are as follow : —Mr J. Connal, nominated by the Woolston School Committee; the Rev. W. Finlayson, Courtenay Committee.; Mr J. McKeague, Dromore Committee; Mr J. H. Newlyn, Halkett Committee; Mr J. L. Scott, Christchurch East Committee; Mr J. G. E. Winsloe, Woodend Committee.
