PLOUGHING MATCH

RESULTS AT RAKAIA.

KEEN COMPETITION. The Rakaia Ploughing Match Association held its annual contest yesterday at Hatfield, in a paddock lent for the occasion by Mr H. Wilkinson. A very hard frost in the morning delayed the start, and made matters awkward for the ploughmen at the beginning. This is the second competition held by die association. Outside ploughmen gave the match solid support, large entries being received from as far north as Sefton and as far south as Otautau, Southlands There was also a very marked increase in the number of entries received from local men. The total number of all entries, 50, constitutes a record for New Zealand. The arrangements Mere carried out without a hitch. The officials pri-

marily responsible for the success of the gathering were: Mr Robert Oakley, president; Mr A. Holmes, secretary; and Mr L. Cordner, treasurer; assisted by a strong committee. A striking feature was the exhibition of the many cups and other prizes to be won outright at the match. The march of progress was to be noted in connection with two prizes, a cup and a medal, won in 1878 and 1874 respectively, by Mr J. McPhail, for sin-gle-furrow ploughing, whereas on Friday, no single-furrow ploughs were on the ground. The paddock used for the match was very well suited for the purposed. The ground itself was old grass laud, and after the frost thawed

out, turned Up fairly evenly throughout. The judges of the teams, Messrs P. Shearer and EL E. Jenkins, made comment on the excellent quality of the six-horse teams on the ground. The sum of £lB, as against £Io last year, was taken at the gate. Following was the number of competitors, the entries for last year being given in parentheses:—Class A 5 (3), B 16 (17), C 9(2), D 11 (G), E S

(10). There were no competitors in Class F, as against two last year. The judges were as follow:—Classes A. B. and E—Messrs J. Turn bull (Timvakl), and J. Giimour (Tai Tapu); Classes C. D. and F, Messrs A. J. Hulston (Halkett), and J. Miller (Highbank); Decorations, harness, and groomage, Messrs G. Withers (Kirwee), and J. Richards (Christ-church); teams, Messrs P.
