METHVEN.
The weather remains bitterly cold
the wind still blowing from the southwest. Vestiges of Saturday’s snowfal are still evident in sheltered places. Mount Hutt has a good winter coating of snow, which will take more than an ordinary nor’wester to thaw.
It was a happy party that attended i the euchre tournament held under the auspices of the local Association Football Club on Tuesday evening in the Town Hall. There were about 51) people present, and a very pleasant evening was spent. .The hall was made very cosy, and a log fire added much to "the comfort of all. The result of the euchre tournament was: Ladies: Mrs Middleton; Men’s: Mr James Allan. Consolation prizes were awarded to Mrs Reid and Mr A. Painter. An enjoyable supper was served and a dance followed. Music was supplied by Mr L. Allred, extras being played by Mrs Alex. Lawrence. These fortnightly socials of the Soccer Club are becoming increasingly popular, and on behalf or the club Mr Haden announced that the next social will take the form of a dance from 8 to 12 p.m. Mr Reg. Duff was the M.C. for Tuesday night’s dance. The Methven Gun Club has arranged for another of its popular hare drives—to take place at Rakaia Gorge on Saturday. Mr W. A. Painter volunteered to run his ’bus to take intending shooters out to the locality. The Methven School Committee held its usual monthly meeting in the Pub- j lie Library on Tuesday evening. Pre- j sent:—Messrs S. Smith (chair), H. Pawson, J. Osborne, W. H. McKee, G. Hercus, J. R. Dalton, W. C. Battson, and S. G. Holmes. An apology for absence was received from Mr J. W. M. Dart-. The headmaster’s report showed an increase in the number on the roll and a slight increase in the average attendance. Winter weather had interfered with attendance. The school buildings had been painted and it was found that sundry repairs were needI ed. Miss Guffie (infant mistress) tenI dered her resignation as from the end of the present month owing to her acceptance of a position at the Beckenham school. The Rev. G. Hercus read his report on the subject of a motor ’bus for bringing children to school from the Springfield area. Twenty parents have notified their intention to support the project and ask for similar terms as already in operation on the Highbank Road area. There was considerable discussion on. the proposal of a District High School, and it was decided to communicate with the Council of Education and the Minister for Education to the effect that steps be taken so as to ensure the opening of the High School at the beginning of
next year. The chairman reported he had received a very encouraging letter from the Minister of Education on the matter. A vote of thanks was passed to Rev. Mr Hercus for the valuable service he had rendered the committee and the district in general in the important matter of the establishment of a High School. Miss Cuffie’s resignation was accepted with regret. A frost of slightly over 10 degrees was experienced here on Wednesday morning. Tht sun came out clearly and the day was bright and warm.
EIFFELTON. The second of the series of euchre parties was held in the school. There was a very large attendance and a very enjoyable evening was spent. Cards were played till about 10 o’clock, after which a dance was held, the music being supplied by Mr H. Thompson. The ladies’ prize (presented by Mr Thompson), was won by Miss M. Deal and the men’s by Mr E. Waller. The consolation prizes were won by Mrs A. Maginness and Mr A. Mc-Lauchlin. Once again the need of a spacious hall was felt. The .attendance was sufficient proof that a hall would be well, patronised. For some time past there have been rumours of a. hall for Eiffelton, but it seems that no one will take the initial move. Is there no one in Eiffelton. with sufficient public spirit to convene a meeting? . On Saturday the school girls journeyed to Willowby to play a basketball match with the Willowby ladies tmun The girls proved no match for the Willowby players, who won easily by 30 to 8. Miss Symonds was the referee. After the game afternoon tea was provided by the Willowby team.
