LOOKING BACK

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO.

> (From the "Guardian," July 19, 1899.) [ Concert at Timvald.—A concert in ; aid of the Tinwald Presbyterian Sabbath School was held in the Templar Hall on Thursday evening. A large audience attended, and the Rev. Mr Skinner occupied the chair. The programme was well selected, and every item was given in an efficient and artistic manner. The numbers were contributed by the following:—Solos by Mesdames D. Tippett and Biggs, Misses A. Clark, S. Donaldson, A. Cairncross, and A. Meharry, Messrs J. Cow, W. McDonald, and W. Mackay; a duet by Mrs D. Tippett and Air J. Cow; and. two recitations by Ali6S M. Lewis. Business Change.—Amongst the numerous business changes that have occurred in Ashburton during the present year is one of recent date that will no doubt be of interest to the farming community, especially to growers of grain, viz., a change in the proprietorship of the Crown Roller Flour Mills, Wakanui. It is rumoured that the well-known miller, Mr Edwin Thomas, has disposed of his mill property to Air Thomas Rollitt, who for the past eight years has been mill manager of the ' Canterbury Roller Aiills, Ashburton. Land Sales.—Mr T. Bullock has sold 1462 acres, with extensive improvements, fronting the road leading from the Hinds railway station to the Rangitata traffic bridge, at £2820, about £1 19s per acre; also 243 acres, near the above, at £1 17s per acre. Other sales are: One thousand acres, just above the Ealing railway station, at £1 17s 6d per acre; 2 roods 10 perches, corner of Winter's Road and Charles Street, Allonton, at £25 10s; half-acre fronting North Town Belt, with small cottage thereon, at £55. A Mild Winter.—Very mild winter conditions, much on a par with those being experienced in Ashburton County, are reported from Nelson. So favourable has the season been there that spring vegetables are now being used. New potatoes have been in use for some weeks past, and it is stated that within the course of a few days green peas will bo sufficiently advanced tojbe picked.
