(From "Guardian," June 9, 1899.) Borough Council.—There were present at the ordinary meeting of the Borough Council the Mayor, and Messrs Thomas, Davison, Orr, Davis, Paul, Maynard, and Pauling. Ashburton School Committee. —The ordinary monthly meeting of the Ashburton School Committee was attended by Messrs W. Craighead (chairman), H. M. Jones, F. H. Steel, J. Phaup, G. Meddins, R. McCallum, D. C. Stock," and W. J. Silcock. An apology for non-attendance was received from Mr R. S. Bean.
English Cricket. The following have been selected to represent England in the second test match: Jackson, Jes Sop, Townsend, Hayward, Tyldesley,'Lilley, Mead, Rhodes, MacLaren, Fry, and Rangitsinhji. Skin Sales.—Skin sales were held at the yards of Messrs Friedlander Bros., D. Thomas, F. W. Hanmer and the N. Z. Farmers' Co-operative Association, yesterday. The following prices were secured: —Crossbred skins (farmers), inferior Is sd, Is lid, 2s. 2s 6d, 2s 9d, to 2s lOd; best 3s, 3s Id, 3s sd, 4s, ss, 6s sd, to 5s 9d: butchers' crossbreds 2s 6d, 3s, 3s 6d, 3s Sd, 3s 9d, 4s, 4s 2d, to 6s; merino, inferior Is 6d, 2s, 2s Id, 2s 2d, to 2s 9d; best 3s, 3s 4d, to 3s 7d; pelts sd, Bd, lid, to Is; hides 7s, 7s 3d lis, 12s 6d, 15s 3d to 15s 9d, keenly competed for. Fat (rough) lid to' lid, rendered lid. Hockey.—The following will represent the Ashburton Hockey Club in the match against Rakaia at Rakaia: —R. Miller F. Watt, Clark, Cambridge, B. Amos,'J. Smith, A. Silcock, W. Smith, E. Marsdcn, D. Stock. Emergencies— W. Silcock, A. Mitchell, N. Jones, and Mevenberg. . . St. Patrick's Day Sports Association. —A general meeting was held in the Arcade Chambers last evening. It was decided to join the Sports Association, and Messrs H. McSherry and D. McDonnell were elected delegates.
