SUCCESSFUL MEETING.
ONYX'S FINE PERFORMANCE.
A TRACK RECORD. The Ashburton Trotting Club's Winter Meeting was held m fine but windy weather on Baturaay, and the attendance of the public was large. The racing was of an excellent standard, and m only one event was the Snish at all uninteresting. The finest race of the day was the County Handicap, won by Mr L. it. King's Onyx It was a surprise victory, and the winner paid over a score and a halt. SvS e«U a local track, record for tS miles, namely 4min. 26 4-5 sec. As sited on Saturday, the Sapling Stakes for the third time in succesto Mr R. M. Morten, whose Ssentative was the promising colt lie 'ace in the Winter Handicap with Lady Swithin. The times throughout the day were good, proving the splendid'ccndTticn of the track, and the groundsman, Mr F W alley is to be tomplirnented on the results of his work during the past few weeks The totalisator figures showed a further falling off this year, when 320,157 was handled as against £2 r 6M9 last year. ' . . The leaders over the first furlong -were Vera Logan and Colenut. Then Nelson Fame ran to the front and led the back from Cammie, Tenerifre'and Lady Swithin, with Golden Devon and Prince Derby also handy. Coming into the straight Lady Swithin, Golden Devon and Tenenffe were m the front, but Teneriffe retired a little further on. Lady Swithin drew out a furlong from the post and won in a fine finish by almost two lengths from Golden Devon. Then came Ben Ohau and Prince Derby. Times—--2.53

The early running was made by Oaknut, Hvdaspes, Blair Audubon, and "Prince Swithin and Downcast. Entering the straight Oaknut was still in front, and Leading Lady was handy. Downcast challenged, as also did Lady Embrace. The latter had too much in hand for Downcast, bat could not catch Oaknut, who won by almost four lengths. Downcast was a half a length behind Lady Embrace. "Times 2.17 4-5, 2.15 1-5, 2.16 3-5.
