ASHBURTON TROTS.

WINTER MEETING HELD.

LARGE ATTENDANCE TO-DAY

KOHARA WINS SAPLING STAKES.

Tli© Winter Meeting of the Ashburton Trotting Club is being held on the Ashburton racecourse to-day in fin© weather. The conditions are very mild, and there is a light nor’-west wind. The crowd was well up to the average for the Winter Meeting, which, for a one-day fixture, is regarded as easily the best in the Dominion. The town and district were strongly represented, while there were large contingents from Christchurch and Timaru districts. The fact that the New Zealand Sapling Stakes were to be decided at the meeting lent additional interest, f<jr this is one of the finest trotting classics in the country. The fields in all handicap events were large, making the speculators’ I task decidedly - difficult. The racing so far has been of a splendid order, and the meeting is proving enjoyable in j every respect. [ The club’s secretary, Mr A. A. Fooks, and his staff are to be complimented on the despatch which is again characterising the proceedings. The arrangements are complete in every detail. The presence of the First Canterbury Mounted Rifles’ Band considerably enhanced the day’s enjoyment. The County Handicap was one of the prettiest races seen on the course. There was little between the front division all the way, but the feature of the event was the brilliant finish put up by Onyx, who came with a great run on the outside, and beat Child© Pointer for first honours. The Sapling Stakes, won by Kohara, and driven by J. Biyce, was for the most part,. a fairly good raice. The finish would have been much more interesting if Mr H. F. Nicoll’s Gibraltar, who looked) to have a winning chance,- had. not broken about 50 yards from the post. Mr Morten, owner of Kohara, who ran a meritorious race, has now won _the Sapling Stakes three

, years in succession. . J : The Oup accompanying the stakes was presented to the winning ownjer... hy, Mr H. F. Nicoll, the president amid cheers. ■ • naif* • The totalisator investments for t: six races amounted) to £14,200, a decrease on the previous year’s figures.
