In the course of the Lausanne de-r bate in the Commons, Mr Lloyd George condemned the late Government’s action and declared that all - they did wag to tell the Dominions they had agreed with the Allies that the Dominions would npt be represented. asked what would be the position in the event of trouble in the .Near East, and pointed out that Russia, would not abandon her aspirations for Constantinople and the Straits, while he could not imagine that Italy would he always satisfied to see a great' derelict j land, which was once prosperous under the Italian flag,, and which languished I under the 'British flag, without making some effort. Turkey might always be
depended upon to provoke a quarrel, Trouble was inevitable in the East. Mr Qrmsby Gore declared that Mr Lloyd .George’s remarks were most mischievous. : Mr Winterton said had Mr Lloyd George’s Turkish policy been allowed to proceed it would have gone a. long way towards making the problem of the Government in India impossible. There was nobody more universally distrusted in India, or one whose policy was believed.to have been more disas trous to the relation of India with Bri tain, than Mr Lloyd George
