IN FUTURE WARS.
COUNTERING GAS ATTACKS. v GAS DRILL IN SCHOOLS. (Per Press Association —Copyright.) LONDON, June 6. The Bordeaux correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph” says: Emphasising that chemicals will probably decide the next war, Surgeon-Commander Hitch, before the International Public Health Congress, said the possibility, and even probability, of bombing the civil population with poisonous gases must be admitted.
Special training t i the elementary facts of chemical warfare should be provided for medical men, teachers, Boy Scouts, members of the Y.M.C.A. and others. Also, there should be anti-gas drills in the schools, and educational campaigns in the newspapers and through the cinemas. Organised sections of the community should be supplied with gas masks in peace time, in order to act as guides to the rest.
The only method of protecting young children would be sealed rooms, but municipal dug-outs might be provided for mothers and children able to get there in time.
