TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO.

(From the "Guardian," May,7, 1899.)

Ashburton Poultry Society.—A meeting of the committee of the Poultry Society was held last evening, when a large amount of correspondence was read by the secretary (Mr R. B. Restell). A suggestion was made by Mr C. Baumelberg, of Christchurch, that as the date fixed for the Ashburton show would clash with the Wellington Society's function, the Ashburton Society should hold its show at the end of June. The dates were altered to July 21 and 22. |

A Record:—Mr G-. Porter on Thursday lowered the 50-mile road record from 2hrs 28£min to 2hrs 17 min. Wakanui Road Board District Ratepayers' Meeting.—At the meeting of the Wakanui Road Board held yesterday, there were present—Messrs P. Stewart (chairman), J. Cochrane, A. H. Ayrton, and J. Lloyd. After its deliberations, the board adjourned, and the annual meeting of ratepayers was held. There was. only a small attendance, those present in addition to the members of the board being:—Messrs D. Fitzgerald, D. Leddy, M. Wilson, and F. Cairns. Mr P. Stewart presided. County Council:—The ordinary meeting of the Ashbui'ton County Council was held today. Present All the i members, Mr E. G. Wright, M.H.R., presiding. Mr Harper again moved his motion to grant a sum of £2l in aid of the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade on behalf of Tinwald, Hampstead, and .Allenton districts for fire prevention purposes, and spoke at some length in support of his motion. Mr Williamson seconded the motion after it had been amended to make the sum payable to the Borough Council on the undertaking that the Brigade agree to attend fires in these districts. Mr Holmes and Mr Johnston strongly opposed the vote, and the chairman spoke with equal strength in its favour. On a division "the following was the voting:—Ayes 6—'Messrs Williamson, Lambie, Stitt, Chapman, Harper, and the Chairman; noes 3—Messrs Johnston, Holmes, and Herring.
