LOOKING BACK
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO.
(From the “ Guardian,” May 6, 1899.)
Coincidence.—Twenty-two years ago, on the same day, Messrs Henry Milner and John Dunn, when in Christchurch, bought farms situated at Flemington, and during the 22 years the two lived side by side and farmed their sections on most amicable terms. These two have recently sold their farms, and the sales took place on the same day, followed by clearing sales on an equal date. Both were born on the same day of the month, although not in the same year; and Saturday next will probably see the two neighbours part, one for the north and the other for the south.
Literary Society.— A well-attendqd meeting of the Ashburton Catholic Literary Society was held in the schoolroom on Wednesday evening, and Mr L. Hanrahan occupied the chair. Messrs R. J. Henry and P. Hanrahan were elected to fill vacancies on the council. Mr McSherry delivered an interesting paper on “ The position of Henry the eighth on the Reformation.” Mr I). McDonnell also gave a paper on “Cycling.” Mr F. Cooper then took the members a trip over the Southern Alps by the aid of his magic lantern. At a special meeting of the society the question of forming a Dramatic Club was freely discussed, and eventually decided upon. Mr W. Bowden was elected lender, and Mr P,. Hanrahan secretary. Mount Somers Road Board.—At the ordinary monthly meeting of the Mount Somers'Road Board all the members were present. The rate of day wages was reduced to the following scaleMan only 6s, with one horse team 10s, with two horse team 12s. Tenders for work on Scott’s Road (continuation of tramway road) were considered and accepted as follow :—No 1 Contract —W. H. Fagan, No 2 Contract— J. Brown._
