SECT RAVAGED BY DISEASE
(Per Press Association—Copyright.) NEW YORK, May 4.
At Lebanon Pennsylvania, disease has made terrible ravages among members of the Faith of the Tabernacle, a small religious sect residing there whose tenets provide for the cure of all ailments through prayer. Seven members have died during the past three weeks from diphtheria. No cognisance was taken after the first few deaths, but after that neighbours sent physicians who, however, were not permitted to treat the afflicted. One family lost three members in a few days, but the surviving relatives only continued their prayers. The authorities are unable under the law to force medical attention upon the afflicted, and are compelled merely to quarantine the houses where the deaths occurred. The sect, moreover, conceals information concerning the presence of disease, disclosures coming only after death.
