MR RONALD CAMPBELL. > % _

The death occurred at an early hourthis morning of Mr Ronald Campbell,, of Ashbiirton East, and' formerly of" Chertsey. in his 81st year. Mr Campbell, who was one of the pioneer settlers =■ of Chertsey, ■ was very well known tOi all the older residents of the'County, :

and he was a man who was very highly - esteemed and respected. '/ ' Born at Fort William, Inverness,. Scotland, Mr. Campbell spent his early 7 days in his native country,■ and beforecoming to. 'New Zealand with his wifehe lived at Amulree, to which jplaee" the family had removed. The trip to> New Zealand was made in the sailingvessel Bine Jacket, in 1866, and a* short while after their arrival at Lyt--telton, Mr and Mrs Campbell took upland at Southbridge. Mr Campbell - was no stranger to farming, lie having acquired a fair knowledge during his years at Home. From Southbridge, Mr and Mrs Campbsll removed to Barrhill. in the Rakaia district. Mr Campbell was one of the first to engage in wheat-growing in this district. Subsequently they settled at Chertsey, and remained there until some four years ago. when they retired to Ashburton. \ Mr and Mrs Campbell were in the Chertsey district for close on 50 years. Mr Campbell took a keen interest in local affairs, and was for 14' years a member of the Tinner Ashburton Road Board, besides which he was on the Cemetery Board and the local School Committee, of which he was chairman' for some time. Pastoral Association matters, ami wa» a man of very progressive mind. In-. Caledonian Societv circles Mr Campbell was also a valued personage. MrsCampbell predeceased him about 15' months ago- Five sons and on& daughter are left, namely, Mr Donald' Campbell, farmer Chertsey; MrArchi- . bald Campbell, farmer, Chertseyr MrRonald Campbell, farmer, Dromorer Mr Colin Campbell, grain merchant, Ashburton: Mr W. D. CamobelT, solicitor. Timaru; and Miss M. Campboll, Ashburton East. The burial wilt take place at the Chertsey Cemetery : on Saturday morning.
