COST OF A WHARF. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, July 25. Mr Mitchell, chairman of the Wellington Harbour 1 Board, announced at the board- meeting to-night that the lowest tender for the construction of the Pipitea wharf had been £198,987, and the actual cost carried out .by day labour* was £161,523, the saving to the board being £37,464. j
FIRE IN A CHURCH. DUNEDIN, July 25. Shortly before 9 p.m. St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Caversham, caught fire. The vestry was in a hopeless condition when the engines of the South Dunedin and City Fiite Brigades arrived, so the firemen confined their attention to preventing the flames attacking the church proper, where the firfe had commenced to take hold. The fire was under control in twenty minutes, and was extinguished after half an hour’s strenuous work. The vestry was gutted and the contents (valued at about £175) were demolished. The church was damaged to the extent of £2OO. The organ, which was situated near the fire, fortunately was not damaged by water.
