SALES OF COAL.
SACKS MUST BE LABELLED. Cases of more than usual interest to the housewife were heard in the Wellington Magistrate’s Court on Friday, when a number of coal dealers were proceeded against by the Labour Department under the provisions of tho Weights and Measures Amendment Act," 1922, for delivering coal in sacks not properly closed and labelled. Mr R. T. Bailey, who represented the Department, said that the cases were the first brought under the Act, the provisions of which the Department intended strictly to enforce. It would be most advisable for coal merchants and hawkers who sold coal and coke, lie added, carefully to study tho requirements of the regulations governing the sales and delivery of tho commodities.
The defendants, who pleaded guilty, were: The Wellington South Coal, Wood, and Coke Company, Foley and Jordan, and It. Platt (delivering coal in sacks not properly closed and labelled), and J. H. Goldsworthy (failure to give a. proper docket). The Magistrate (Mr B. Page, S.M.) recorded convictions in each case, and ordered the. defendants to oncosts.
