EPIDEMIC IN OTAGO.

(Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, July 5

Influenza., most of a mild type, still is prevalent in the city, but the position is not yet showing much improvement. Since June 23 five pneumonic cases have been reported in the Otago district, and since June 27 nine eases have been reported from Southland. Two deaths have been reported in Dunedin. The attendance at schools is seriously affected, but so far none have been closed, except a few in country districts. ANGLICAN SYNOD. WELLINGTON, July K. The merits and demerits of the Nelson system of giving religious instruction in schools ivere discussed in the Anglican Synod to-day. Eventually it was decided to approve of the entry M clergymen into State schools for that purpose. To commemorate the centenary of Archdeacon Henry Williams, it was decided to establish a divinity school in the diocese of Dornakal, India, whose native bishop recently visited the Dominion.

The Wairau River Board has appointed Messrs Vickerman and Lancaster, engineers, to make a survey of the river flats from Waihopai to the sea, covering some ninety square miles, and also to report on the hydraulic and flood conditions of the rivers, outlining a scheme on'economic lines to give relief from floods. LOST IN THE BUSH. ! PALMERSTON N., July 5. Stewart Robbie, aged twenty, whose parents reside at Palmerston North, has been missing for four days in the bush at Shannon. The missing man and his brother Norman, aged twentysix, have a farm at Shannon and on Sunday last both went into the bush to bring out some cattle. On their return they killed a wi/i pig, leaving the carcase. Next day Stewart Robbie went back to the bush bo see the cattle and also to secure the dead pig. From that time nothing has been seen of the missing man. His brother Norman went in search hut was lost, finally emerging into the open country near Levin. A search yesterday was fruitless and parties are to-day making an exhaustive starch. NAVAL APPOINTMENT. WELLINGTON, July 5. Captain Alister F. Beal has been appointed to H.M.S. Chatham as C'ommodore-in-eommand of the NonZealand station and as Naval Advisor to the Government, in succession to Commodore Alan G. Hotham. Captain Beal arrives about the middle of August. Tn the Police 'Court Ernest Harold McLean, a carpenter, was committed ■for. sentence, having admitted that he went through tho form of marriage at Dargaville in January 1922, while his wife, whom he married in 1913, was still living, with three children, at Grey Lynn.
