HENLEY REGATTA. GOLLAN BEATS HOOVER. LONDON, July 4. The Henley regatta opened to-day in perfect weather. . In the third heat of the Diamond
Sculls, Gollan beat Hoover by threequarters of a length. ! Time, 8111111 defeat Avas the biggest surprise of the opening day. Gollan led all the way, and Avas a length and a half ahead' at the stewards’ enclosure. Hoover then made a, big spurt, boon his boAvs reached Gollan s stern, and crept within half a length but Gollan’s lead was just too much. The “Daily Express” says Gollan has been deaf and dumb since Ins birth, but can “lip-read” perfectly. [W. M. Hoover, of Duluth, U.S.A., won the Diamond Sculls last year in 9min 32sec.’J
