COMMONWEALTH AFFAIR*. ARTISTS TAKE LEGAL ACTION. (Per Press Association, Copyright). MELBOURNE, July 4. The trouble among the artists over the selection of pictures fon the exhibition of Australian art in London, has become acute. Two Victorian members of the selection committee have secured an interim injunction to July 10th, on behalf of some of the Victorian artists who are dissatisfied with the selections, to prevent the New South Wales Society of Artists despatching Victorian pictures to the exhibition, and also for the delivery of the pictures to the owners. In the meantime efforts are being made to secure a compromise.

The selections have resulted in much heated; correspondence in the Melbourne and Sydney Press, the inclusion of several samples of one New South Wales artist’s work coming in for particularly severe criticism.

LESS PILLAGING. (Received This Day, 11.5 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. Mr Oakes announced that, owing to a pronounced decrease in pillaging on the wharves at Sydney, shipowners thinks it unnecessary to contribute toward the cost of establishing an antipillaging force.

INTER-STATE SHIPOWNERS. Mx T. J. Parker, formerly manager of the Huddart, Parker Shipping Co. at Dunedin and Auckland, has been appointed chairman of the inter-State Steamship Owners’ Association.

SYDNEY GROWING. The number of new buildings and their cost in the metropolitan area during the past year reached records. There were over 10,000 buildings erected at a total cost of £10,760,000. The previous record was in 1914, when 9928 buildings were erected at a cost of £6,930,000. A PARTY LEADER. MELBOURNE, This Day. In the Senate, Mr Givens beat Mr J. D. Miller by 11 to 10 for the party selection. Subsequently he was reelected president by 21 votes to 11, Labour voting for Mr Barker. Had Mr Givens and Mr Miller both submitted their names to the Senate it is understood the Labour twelve would have voted for Mr Miller.
