GIRLS WHO STAY OUT zjATE. ( A battle of wits is in progress between the college authorities at Oxford and the undergraduates. In the past these young women have devised ways and means of getting into college unseen and unheard late at night. They have been known to scale, walls, sometimes unaided, but on at least one occasion last term with the help of an undergraduate. With the true Raleigh gallantry he stooped down, the fair offender jumped on to his back, and lvas hoisted up until she could grasp the top of the wall and clambor over. Now, at one of the colleges, 3ft spiked railings have been placed upon the sall, and they were given a coat of paint to hide their ugliness. The average citizen has been puzzled at seeing these railing erected, for they certainly do not add to the beauty of the college precincts. Undergraduates passing the spot, however, have been observed to smile complacently. They guess the purpose these obstacles are meant to serve, but it is rumoured that the _ girls, with sporting instincts, murmuring the lines of the Cavalier poet about stone w r alls and iron bars, are not unduly perturbed. . - Their counter-strategy is awaited with interest. Burglars have been known to take feather pillows with them on their nocturnal expeditions to meet such a contingency as iron spikes !
