BOROUGH AFFAIRS
COUNCIL MEETING HELD. VARIOUS MATTERS DISCUSSED. The Ashburton Borough Council met last night. There were present: The Mayor (Mr R. Galbraith), and Messrs F. Z. D. Ferriman, W. H. Woods, R. M. Dunlop, W. G. Hillier, W. Page, R. Kerr, J. W. Bowden, H. R. C. McElrea, W. H. Robinson and E. H. Childs. The financial statement showed that since last meeting receipts had amounted to £770 16s 6d. Advice from the Medical Officer of Health was received to the effect that he would confer with the council, at its first meeting after Easter, on health affairs. The Hampstead Memorial Committee wrote placing on record its appreciation of the assistance rendered by the Water and Fire Brigade Committee and the council in general in connection with the Hampstead baths. The council had given valuable assistance when the well in connection with the baths failed the authorities at a critical time. i The Wakanui Road Board intimated it had decided to take over control of the electric light at the corner of the Old Men’s Home, and also the one at the bridge in Bridge street. — Received. That the council have the “potholes” on the North-east Belt filled in was the rather brief request made by the Upper Ashburton Road Board. The Mayor stated that the work had been attended to. Seven ratepayers of Cameron street west asked that the footpath in front their houses be asphalted. The request was viewed favourably and referred to the Works Committee. The Sanitary Inspector (Mr E. N. Johnson) reported having investigated and disinfected two cases of infectious disease in the Borough during December, 1922, and February, 1923. He had also inspected and reported to the Medical Officer of Health on conditions existing at a proposed maternity home in the Borough. A request by the Advance Ashburton Association that kerbing be carried out along East Street between Cameron Street and the overhead railway bridge on the south-west side was referred to the Reserves Committee. The Works Committee recommended with reference to the "Graham and others for asphalting footpath in Havelock Street that the work be, done if the petitioners are prepared to pay half-cost, the cost to be at the rate of £3 per chain. It was recommended that tenders be called for the cleaning of water-races. —Adopted. The Reserves Committee recommended: That the council lay down No. 1 cricket ground at an estimated cost of £l2 immediately, and that No. 2 ground be also laid down at an estimated cost of £B, provided a favourable reply is received from the Rugby Union. . The repayment to be by three equal annual instalments before December 31 in each year.—Agreed to. Mr Robinson asked that the cost be computed of forming 12 chains of Trevor’s Road, between Beach Road and Wellington Street, where the traffic was heaviest. This section of the road got into a very bad state during the winter time. The Wakanui Road Board would have to pay half-cost. The matter is to be reported on. Tenders were opened for the Netherby-Hampstead nightsoil contract. Mr T. E. Atkinson, at £24 5s per calendar month, was the successful tenderer.
