ASHBURTON COUNTY ASSOCIATION. The fortnightly meeting of the Ashburton County Cricket Association was held on Saturday night, when there were present.:—Mr E. F. Nicoll (in the chair), and Messrs H. J, Chapman (secretary), C. Andrews (Mayfield), J. Nicoll (Ashburton), H. Milliehamp and W. B. Thomas (Tinwald), It. H. Biggar (High School), G. Stayt and W. Goodwin (Lauriston), .J. Willis (Fairfield), H. Green, H. A. Nicholls, and T. Jamieson (Methven)., Apologies for absence were received from Messrs G. Fowke, (Fairfield), and F. Pritchard (Ashburton). The secretary reported on the reception that had been accorded the deputation to the Borough Council, and stated that unofficially he was informed that the first wicket of 30yds square was about to be laid down on the upper ground. The match, Riccarton v. Ashburton, at Ashburton, was set down for Good Friday and the following day. The secretary read a report of the sub-committee set up -to go into the subject of improvement to County cricket. Rakaia and Mayfield, said the chairman, appeared to be doubtful as to whether they could place any teams in the field next season. If these two clubs became defunct, then it would be useless to divide the town and country teams for next season. Mr Pritchard’s motion that next season there should be separate town and country competition for the Studholme Shield, the winners to play off was brought forward by Mr J. Niooll. The motion was seconded, pro forma, by Mr C. G. Andrews. That the motion would have the effect of causing the country teams to do all the travelling, was remarked upon by Mr H. Green. Mr R. H. Biggar asked the mover’s deputy if the clause “provided a sufficient number of country teams enter” could be inserted in the motion. The chairman said that as the prime mover was absent, the motion would have to be accepted or rejected in its original form. An amendment that the matter be deferred till the receipt of entries for next season was moved by Mr Green, seconded by Mr Nicholls, and earned unanimously. That the playing of two-days’ matches instead of the present one-day game, was adopted unanimously as a recommendation to the next season’s delegates. That the association’s by-laws be so framed as to peripit of the inclusion of two different players on separate afternoons of the one match was moved by Mr G. Stayt, and was carried as a recommendation to the incoming committee. The date of the playing of the final match of the Studholme Shield Competition was left in the hands of the captains of the two leading teams. The playing of a County match, teams to he decided by the selection committee, was agreed upon for Easter Monday and Tuesday. The secretary was given power to engage a man to mow the oval, if at any time necessary. It was decided to hold a smoke concert at the end of the season, Messrs W. B. Thomas, R. H. Biggar, and the secretary being appointed to arrange details.
