SWIMMING.

EAST ASHBURTON CLUB.

RESULTS OF EVENING SPORTS

The East Ashburton Swimming Club held another series of events tit thj Hairipstead School baths last evening. There was a fair attendance of onlookers, and a varied programme was presented. In the 25 yards ladies' race (in which all the competitors could be more correctly styled ladies-to-be) the swimming was excellent considering the ages of the girls. A kind of side-stroke was swum by all except I. Dalley, who did splendidly with the breast-stroke. J. Brophy in the 25 yards juniors, and G. Maddox in the 50 yards seniors, were disqualified for leaving the mark before time. The' cork scramble provided some amusement, the elusive cork requiring a good deal of coaxing to be caught. Evidently the swimmer with the largest mouth did not have the best prospects of winning, for one small boy secured three at one capture. The very appropriate prize of a corkscrew was presented to the winner by Mr H. C. N. Watson.

Some novelty diving was given by G. Maddox, after -which Mr Watson, headmaster of the school, asked for the public's support for the club in its efforts to improve the baths. The services of a caretaker had been engaged, and every attention wuold be given to learners. Following were the results of tho events: —
