LOOKING BACK

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS ACO.

(From “Guardian,” Jan. 31, 1898). A meeting of the Coldstream. Road Board was held at Hinds on Monday last. Present— Messrs B. G. Wright,, D. Miller, J. Studholme, junr.,, and J. McKeage,. Mr Dobson (the chairman) wrote apologising for unavoidable absence, and explaining the principal business to be considered.

Mr Wright was voted to the chair, and Mr Dobson was granted leave, of absence for the meeting. . '* Rhodes’ Trustees applied for the transfer of properties which they had. sold to Messrs Kelman, B. Bulmer and J. Studliolme, junr., and the. alterations were-ordered to be made. Some properties disposed of by the Waste Lands Board were also ordered to be entered on the rolls to the purchasers and lessees. Tenders were ordered, to be invited for forming and metalling about 80 chains of Crowe’s Road, the metal to be obtained by deepening the existing ditches. Pipes were ordered to be substituted for a bridge, ah 3 another bridge taken up, and the dry channel filled in on the same road. An expenditure of £5 was authorised for easing the grades of cuttings 'into two creeks near the Toi paddock. Notice was given of an intention to strike a general rate of one-farthing in the £ at the next meeting of the board on February 21, the rate to be payable in one sum on March. 1, 1898. Accounts amounting to £9 8s 4'cT were passed for payment and the meeting adjourned. The following are the vital statistics of Ashburton for the month of January;—Births, 22; marriages 1, deaths 9. The rainfall in the hills district during January is thus reported by our correspondent:—Alford Forest, 2.62 inches; Alford Station, 1.55 inches.
