OBITUARY

MRS ISABELLA CAMPBELL. .-:,--r-O.V C :ij„ ' . r It with regret that we chronicle the « death of Mrs Isabella Campbell; wife of Mr Ronald Campbell, formerly of Chertsey, which occurred last night at Ashburton. Mrs Campbell was in her 80th 3 7 ear, and with Mr Campbell came to New Zealand some 58 years ago,' immediately after their marriage. She >'■ was bom in Dunkeld, Perthshire, Scotland, and made the trip to the colony \ in the old sailing vessel “Blue Jacket,” the voyage occupying several months. From Lyttelton, Mr and Mrs Campbell went to Southbridge, where they followed a rural occupation, later removing to the Barr Hill district,-where they went in for cropping. Forty-five years ago residence was taken ( lip in the Chertsey district; Mr and Mrs Campbell were amongst the oldest settlers of that part. About 15’ years ago Mrs Campbell made a trip to her native land. She - was a woman who, like her husband, - worked very hard tor the advancement of the district, and her efforts to pro--mote social welfare were always successful. Mrs Campbell was a devout churchwoman and a staunch supporter of the prohibition' cause. For a • considerable time she held the presidency of the Mothers 1 Union at Chertsey. Her charitable disposition endeared her to the hearts of all with whom she came into contact and she was regarded as perhaps the most well-informed woman over a wide district, and right up to the last she was a keen reader, showing an unusual inclination for the heaviest and best literature available. During the war period there was nomore enthusiastic supporter of patri- 1 otic movements, despite her age, and. 1 it is a noteworthy fact that from th'o outbreak of hostilities to the conclusion, she knitted socks and other garments for the soldiers practically all the time. Three years ago Mr and Mrs Campbell retired Andwtook nip--residence at Hampstead. Mrs Campbell had been more or less an invalid" for the last few years, and two month* ago she was compelled to take to herbed. There are five sons and one? daughter in Canterbury. These are:— > Messrs Donald; and Archie Campbell 7 (Chertsey), Colin and Ronald Campbell!; (Ashburton), and William, Campbell. (Timaru), and Miss Mary Campbell » (Ashburton). r , - ; .Rod.
