LOOKING BACK
TWENTY FIVE YEARS AGO. (From “Guardian,” Dec. 15, 1897). The monthly meeting of the Ashburton School Committee was held last evening. Present—Mess cock, Meddins, Chapman, Phaup, and Steel. An apology for absence was received from the chairman. The credit balance at the bank was stated to be £lO 16s 6d. The headmaster reported that the average attendance for the past month had been 372 out of a roll number of 412. The highest attendance on any half-day was 3 to. With regard to prizes, he said some arrangement would haye to be made for purchasing books. At least £2 should go to the infants for toys, books, etc. All should be catered foi in the matter of Christmas gifts. Me suggested Tuesday, December 23, as a suitable day for breaking-up for the annual five-weeks’ holiday. This date had been agreed upon at Ham'pstead, and was one that enabled those who lived at a distance to get home for Christmas eve. The report was The mistress of the Allenton School has reported that the roll number at present is—boys 32, girls 31, total 63. The average attendance for the past four weeks—boys 25.8, girls 26.4 —total 52,2. In regard to the holidays, Miss Forrester suggested closing the school on December 23.
