A fire gutted a large store belonging to the Harbour Trust Cbmmissioners in Erskine Street. The store was crammed mostly with inflammable materials, including large quantities of turpentine, wax vestas, kauri: gum and oils, which burned with extreme fierceness. The gas generated from the turpentine caused a severe explosion, which added to the damage, besides injuring two firemen. The damage is estimated at £40,000.
