More than a hundred British M.P.'s who were at the Houße abstained fro» the division on which the Government were defeated on the amendment exempting co-operative profits from th© corporations tax. Many of them, were at dinner, and declared that it was "too hot to vote." Others, who were enjoying the breeze on the terrace, re-. fused response to the Government whips' appeal because, they thought, "the Government wilT be all right." Perhaps the real reason lies m the fact that there happen to be four million co-operators m the country.
