The Department of Agriculture has .received the followi7ig cablegram, dat•ed- September 3, from the High Com.missioner for New Zealand, London: — Meat. — The mutton market contin- • ues weak, specially for heavy-weight. The lamb market is slow, with a weaker tendency. More Hdme-killed and Dutch, and a better variety of meat is available. Beef is m better demand .and the tendency is upwards. Argentine chilled supplies are scarce. Quotations are: — New Zealand mutton, light-weight Bjd, heavy-weight 6£d; New Zealand lamb, best light-weight Is Id, medium weight Is o£d, heavy-weight Hid, second-class quality £d to Id lower ; i*few Zealand beef, prome ox, hinds 6d, fores, 4£d ; Argentine chilled beef, "hinds H^dj fores 6d. Butter. — The market this week is ■extremely quiet, and prices are irregular.. The Home market is weaker,

with very little inquiry. Quotations are: — Irish, salted 235s per cwt; Danish, 244s and 250s per cwt; New Zealand (Ist and 2nd grade) 244s to 246s per cwt; Australian, salted (Ist grade) 225s to 227s per cwt, Ist and 2nd 2jrade together 222s to 224s per cwt; Argentine, salted and unsalted, 202s to 219s per cwt. Government, ex store, price: — New Zealand, Ist and 2nd grade, 242s per cwt; Australian, Ist grade, salted 2235 ; 2nd grade, salted, 208s ; Ist and 2nd gracre together, 220s per cwt ; Argentine, salted and unsalted, not sorted to marks, 210s per cwt. Cheese. — For English the demand is limited, but the price remains firm ; finest farmers 160s to 168s per cwt; Canadian, white 118s to 1245, coloured 116s to 1225; New Zealand, white 118s to 1225, coloured 114s to 120s per cwt. Wool. — The wool sales continue with a brisk demand and competition animated. Prices have advanced 5 per cent since the opening for merinoes and fine crossbreds. New Zealand crossbreds are meeting with a good demand from the Home trade. There is keen bidding for slipe.
