NAVAL DEFENCE PROBLEM.

SHARP DIVISIdN OF OPINION. LONDON, June 22. The Australian Press Association learns that it is probable that a naval defence policy will not be determilied at this conference. A military policy possibly may be determined, particularly m relation to land defences eastward from Suez, but there is a sharp division of opinion between^ Canada and South Africa on the one Hand, and Australia and New Zealand on the other, relative to the heayy liabilities involved m the proposed naval policy, which is calculated; to provoke antagonisms j hence the"' suggestion to disouss generalities without attempting to commit the Conference to any concrete policy upon which the delegates are hopelessly divided. Probably a separate defence conference will be held later, following the 1909 precedent.
