TWENTY SHIPS MISSING.

VARIOUS THEORIES PROPOSED. SINN FEIN, PIRATES OR RUM RUNNERS. (Per Press Association Copyright.) (Received June 24, 9.35 a.m.) NEW YORK, June 22. ' The Commerce 1 Department has listed 20 ships as missing during the last six months, including the British tankers Ottawa and Gymeric, and the British schooner, General Home. Other vessels missing include American, Italian, Japanese, Danish, Russian, Spanish, Norwegian, French and Brazilian ships. The piracy theory has been strengthened by the State Department's statement concerning the American schooner Carol A. Deering, which was found off North Carolina m such a condition that foul play was suspected. The crew was missing, but on April 11 a bottle was picked up off Cape Hatteras with a message reading: "Deering hag been captured by an oil-burn-ing boat, something like a chaser." ; When the Deering was discovered all provisions, clothing, and supplies had been removed and the lifeboats were missing. The State Department believes other vessels may have met with a similar fate. The mystery is causing a sensation m shipping circles, and Lloyd's is joining the investigation.
