American naval '"planes sunk the former German submarine 117 m a test air raid to settle the controversy over the usefulness of planes versus capital ships. The submarine* sank after two attacks m which 12 bombs were dropped. Three machines attacked m the first offensive, dropping three bombs and scoring one direct hit. Nine bombs were dropped m the second attack, one hitting direct, whereupon the U-boat disappeared.
The tests will continue. An electrically controlled battleship is being used, as the target, the planes using dummy bombs. Naval air authorities had claimed that capital ships were useless because of the advance m the effectiveness of air attack, which Mr Denby, Secretary of the Nayy, and other proponents of the capital ship. deny.
