MUSIC "HOWLERS."

Some rausical "howlers," written by boys m examination papers, were^ recently described by Dr. Wynne Willson, the* Dean of Bristol.* "One boy," he'gaid, "trying to explain the difference between f and 8 wrote : 'F means forty therefore ff means eighty.' " Another boy stated that he had learnt "five scales and one archipelago," obviously meaning arpeggio. Another asked what he knew of Signor Foil (the opera star who died m 1899% write: ."Signor Foli was interned m Italy and had low, chesty notes, but otherwise he was a man of good character." Other "howlers" were: "Contralto is a low sort of music which only women sing," and "an interval m music is a period for refreshments."
