WILL NOT MEDIATE.
REPARATION QUESTION.
GERMAN REQUEST DECLINED
(Per Preas Association, Copyright.) WASHINGTON, April 21. The United States Government, replying to Germany, refused to mediate m the matter of reparations, but indicated that if Germany would formulate proposals, the United States Government would consider bringing the matter to the attention of the Allies, m order that negotiations might be speedily resumed. it is authoritatively stated that the State Department lias received a, new Note from Germany regarding reparations.
WASHINGTON, April 21. The State Department has published the text of the German Note asking for mediation, and the text of the United States reply. The Berlin Memorandum betrays a feeling of fear on Germany's part^and this plea for help is to avoid what Herr JTehrenbaclr and Herr von Simons call the "immeasurable consequences of the imminent coercive measures "
Mr Hughes, Secretary of State, m his reply, is brief toTfee point of terseness. The reply contains only 125 words, but is not brusque, being rather an earnest expression of willingness to help to solve the situation, since, according to the reply's phraseology, the United States is impressed with the seriousness of the issues involved as affecting the whole world.
