The Refreshments Committee of the] J'ala is making a final appeal to the eadies of Ashburton to redeem their promises of donations of cakes, scones, pastry, etc. All such donations must be left without fail by to-morrow afternoon at the depot, next to Somerset Hotel. It is pointed out that the committee has made its calculations on the numbers forwarded by ladies who filled m the forms provided, and unless the promises are fulfilled, a difficult position will arise. A "Gazette" notice states that the following kinds of game may be killed m the Ashburton Acclimatisation district: — Paradise duck, grey duck, teal, and black swan. It is understood that a ballot of the members of the Seamen's Federation on the question of remaining m the Alliance of Labour resulted m a big majority m favour of the alliance. The Freezing Works Federation is now taking a ballot on the question of the alliance.

James Godwin, contractor, of Ashburton (Mr Godfrey), proceeded against K. Muschamp, farmer, of Templeton (Mr Thomas), . at the Christchurch Magistrate's Court yesterday, claiming the sum ,of £9 Bs, being the price agreed upon for the ploughing, harrowing,/ and grubbing of 12 acres of land m January, 1,920. Defendant maintained that the work had been unsatisfactorily performed. Judgment was given for the defendant.

The Chief Justice and Lad j Stout had a narrow escape from serious injury on Saturday while motoring m the neighbourhood of Karori. The car, when going down a hill, got out of control, and dashed down at the rate of 40 miles ah hour. The. driver, displayed great presence of mjnd, and instead of attempting to take" a corner at the bottom at the speed h^e. was foing, turned the corner into a fence, he car was badly damaged, and the occupants were very fortunate m escaping with minor cutß arid bruises. Mr | Reed, jun., appeared for the defendant, and Mr Skelton for the Borough Coun cil. Mr Reed asked to have the cas n adjourned pending the hearing of an appeal against a recent Supreme Court judgment which upheld the validity of the by-law. After hearing Mr SkeP ton. the Magistrate refused to grant an adjournment, but declined to inflict a penalty for each day on which th» fmimnl<s had been kept m the borough contrary to the by-law.
