PROPOSED SPORTS GALA.

Sir,— ln writing to add my quota m favour of the proposal to hold a sports gala, I would like that there be no controversy between the. supporters of professional athletics and the amateur enthusiast at Ashburton's first attempt for many years to run a sports gathering of any kind. The Timaru residents, and, I think, several Ashburtonians, can testify to the fact that a mixed amateur and professional meeting can be run successfully and very much to the satisfaction of both classes of competitor. The New Year's Day sports at the southern town provided one of the best meetings seen for many a day. >■ Hoping that time will not be wasted at the public meeting by "professional v. amateur" arguments. JOHN DOB.
