DELHI, January 28* The Duke of Connaught was warmh welcomed by large crowds at Calcutti during the Royal procession, two and I half miles from Howrah Station to Go vernment House. An address presented by the corporation of Calcutta referred to developments m the cits since the Duke's last visit m 1889, anc declared that the present visit wai proof of the King Emperor's sympathetic interest m India. The'address concluded with an expression of un-i failing loyalty and devotion, also proi found regret at the postponement oi the visit of the Prince of Wales, tq which all were looking forward m thfl near future. ] In reply the Duke of Connaught ex pressed pleasure at renewing his a© quaintance with the great city whiel was the London of the East. He re minded his hearers of the potent m fluence of _ such a city m moulding public opinion and setting standards o: poblie conduct m other parts of th« country. In the new chapter of Im dian political development, which n was his mission to open, Cakuttij would necessarily exercise a predoml inant influence. He had every com fidence that the citizens would com tinue to be animated by those qualities which had served them and their coutl try so well m the past, and that other! would continue to look to the city fol right leading. He would gladly convel their message of loyalty and devotiom and shared their hope that the Princl of Wales would shortly visit India anfl win the; same widespread affectidfl which his magnetic personality hafl evoked m other parts, of the Empirel The Duke, of Connaught was subsJ quently welcomed by the Governofl The city's welcome 'was very enthusß astic, but the non-co-operators prevß ously conducted a strong campaiifl with the purpose of boycotting *tH visit, and this, coupled with the efforfl of Gandhi,, had an effect,- Part of tfl city observed a strict "hatred exaifl pie."
