SUICIDE OF THORN'S EMPLOYER.

AUCKLAND, December 13

James Granville was found dead in bed at . his farm at Glenmurray on Saturday night. His death was due to a gunshot wound, and there was a gun alongside the body. Granville was a witness in the Pukekawa murder trial. He was the owner of the horse Mickey, and Thorn's employer. He was about 50 years of age. Enquiries showed that Granville committed suicide. He got into bed, tied one end of a piece of cotton to the trigger of a double-barrelled gun, and the other end to his right foot, the muzzle resting in his mouth. Granville was married, his wife residing in Nelson. Thorn worked for Granville, after leaving Eyre's farm, six weeks before the murder occurred. Granville was an important witness at Thorn's trial on the* question as to identity of one of the horses. Granville left a letter addressed to his solicitor. Financial difficulties,. he said, had been the cause of his suicide. He had also -been drinking heavily. . Mr R. A. Singer, counsel for Thorn; brought the fact of Granville's suicide under notice of the Executive, which is meeting here to-day to consider the sentence passed on Thorn.
