Described- in court as a product of modem times, Max Steier, aged 18 a former grocer's apprentice, has been sentenced in Berlin, after a trial lasting eight months, to four years' hard £l 50 1000° r fl'aildS involving more than By forgery he converted £75,000 to Ins own account when sent to the bank with his employer's money, and by secret sales of his employer's goods he ninde a further £80,000 in a few days. With this money he began a life of wild extravagance in Berlin. He bought a motor-car for £3000, hut it was stolen from him after he had used it five days. He also bought n quantity of jewellery, including two diamonds, for £6000, which he" presented to . two film actresses. He bought his parents a furnished house m the country, a motor-car, and several horses. He also invested £20,000 in a distillery. His bank granted him an overdraft of £30,000
