OLD BOYS (37) v. ASHBURTON (9)
The football season advanced a further stage yesterday, when Old Boys defeated Ashburton by 37 to 9 after a strenuous if not a scientific game. Both teams put plenty of vim into their play, and occasionally the rearguards transferred the ball about; but for the most part it lacked that necessary finishing touch. On many occasions indifferent passing bouts turned attack into ..hard-pressed defence. Both forward divisions were good on "solos" but, generally speaking, they failed to adopt the method oi minting; the leather in a. pack. For early in the season the scrumming was satisfactory, but an improvement is necessary in the line-outs. Both fifteens introduced many frantic "speculators," and at times the line-kicking was very doubtful. Old Boys won because they were in better fettle and superior in combination. Ashburton worked hard individually, but cohesion, training, and organised tactics are the qualities that enable a team to emerge on top.
