UNTRIED PRISONERS.
LONDON, April 26.
In the House of Commons, Mr Edward Shortt, K.C., Secretary of State for Home Affairs, stated that out of 179 Irish prisoners in Woi;mwood Scrubbs prison 174 were refusing food. The policy of giving special ameliorative condition" to such men was always followed in England. No demand for any improvement in their conditions had been made. ...
None of the prisoners had been tried, nor was it proposed to try them, because tho fear of being murdered prevented truthful evidence being given by witnesses in Ireland. The prisoners were interned under the order of the Irish Government, and they had been told they had been arrested " lurder suspicion." If they chose^ they could bring the cases before a judicial tribunal.
