Mr H. E. Longworth, physical instructor to the Canterbury schools, has been appointed chief physical instructor for New Zealand schools, with . headquarters in Wellington. He will commence his new duties towards t_i© end of next month. The death has occured at Gisbone of Mr John Townley. aged 83 years. He was one of the most highly-respected residents of the East Coast, and widely known as the " grand old man" of Gisborne. Prior* to settling in Gisborne in' 1873, he was in business in Napier. The deceased was. Mayor of Gisborne and chairman of the local Harbour Board for a very lengthy period.
At. the annual meeting of parishioners of St. Stephen's Church, held lastevening, Mr D t Wood jocosely referred to the long period he had officiated as vicar's warden. After officiating*; in that capacity for so long he had visions of being appointed vicar when the first vacancy arose but Mr Wiseman had been appointed instead. The vicar's rejoinder that as he was junior to Mr Wood he should, have been appointed to the curacy, and Mr Wood as rector,, evoked considerable amusement.
