One case of diphtheria and one of influenza was reported to the Hospital Board this morning.

The price of bacon is likely to come down considerably in .'the near future (says the; Palmerston North Times). It appears that at present there is quite a glut on the bacon market, and those who have been, holding large stocks are anxious to unload.

A Press Association message from Invercargill states that the S*»-uthland Electric Power Board at a meeting yesterday decided to make an immediate commencement with the construction of the Lake Monowai scheme, and appointed Messrs Hay and Vickerman, of Wellington, its constructional engineers to design and carry out the work. Mr Charles Campbell,, who for sanje years has acted as secretary of the Southland League, was appointed secretary to the board. The constructional work Involves an expenditure of over £4,000,000. The Mayor (Mr R. Galbraith), the DoputyrMayor (Mr F. Ferrinian), and Major E. H. Orr, representing the Ashburton Returned Soldiers' Associa-' tion, conveyed to Sir' James Allen at the second north-bound express last night the good wishes -of citizens on his departure for London. ' The Mayor congratulated Sir James on his appointment and spoke in appreciative terms of the sterling service he had rendered the Dominion during the war and especially during the absence of the two party leaders. Major E. H. Orr thanked Sir James Allen, on behalf of the returned soldiers, for the interest he had always shown on their behalf and also for the splendid way in wliich, by his efforts, the New Zealand Division had been kept up to strength in France. Sir James Allen acknowledged the kindly remarks and stated his intention of doing his best to serve the Dominion in London as Higli Commissioner.

The Government Meteorologist's forecast to-day was as follows: — Winds, southerly strong to gale 'at times, decreasing. The weather will probably prove cold and showery, but should improve soon. There will probably be a hard frost to-night. Barometer rising.

Reports from, Mount Somers and Methven this morning were that no snow had fallen on the flat last night, although right to the . hill-foots there was a light sprinkling, which became much heavier towards the summit. Messrs H. J. Harrison and H. "3. Crothers have been elected unopposed to the two vacancies on the* South Rakaia Road Board, and Hon. W. Nosworthy and W. E. Jones to the Anama, Road Board. Flour millers in Otago, and probably elsewhere in New Zealand, are finding it difficult to secure sufficient Tuscan wheat for their mixture. Tuscan is a spring wheat, and at the time for sowing it the weather was too wintry to do so freely. Owing to this shortage the millers have (states the Dunedin "Star") to put into their mixture more Hunters wheat, which is 3d per bushel dearer than Tuscan, and this increases the cost of making flour.
