TROUBLE IN FIJI

STRIKE OF INDIAN WORKERS.

(Per Press Association—Copyright). WELLINGTON, February 7, The Governor-General has bee,n adrisad by th» GoT«rnor of Fiji that the position regarding the strike of Indians is as follows:—

"All the Indian workors are still out at Suva, Rewa, arid the south coast (centres. They put forward' no demands before striking, and it was onlj late last week that they 'submitted a statement of their grievances by a deputation to me. I thereupon appointed a commission to inquire into the whole question of wages and the high cost of living, which is stated to be the whole ' cause of the trouble. The commission has been welcomed by the Indians, who are selecting representatives to give evidence, and are preparing statements. "Agitators have been trying to extend the strike to the sugar centreß of the north coast and west coast, but yesterday the Colonial Sugar Refining Co. made a substantial offer of an increase in wages and the price for cane to the Indian employees and growers. I have not yet heard whether these have been accepted. "Large numbers of Indians at Suva and Rewa are out willingly, but the others, encouraged by agitators, are preventing them from resuming work by intimidation."
