The will of the late Peter Smeaton, formerly of tlie firm of Sargood, Son ! and Ewen', who died this week, provides for bequests of £1000 and all the 'net income therefrom for ten years for the benefit of New Zealand soldiers engaged in the recent war, £200 to amenities and the Town Planning Society, and £1600 to the Otago University, /payable on the death of a legatee', the income to be used for a research scholarship •in science. An additional provisional bequest to the university will, it is hoped, bring the total sum to £5000 for scientific research. A sum of £10,000 is to be invested and the income, paid to the Dunedin Art Gallery Society for the purchasa of oil and water-colour paintings.
