RAILWAY MISHAP.
NAPIER, July 9. The" up train from Palmerston North, which arrived here at 6.15 this evening., had rather a narrow escape from, what might have turned out to be a serious accident. On reaching Ormondville the train pulled into a sjde-liae to allow. the down mail to pass.' The strain was an exceedingly long one, tho services of two engines being required tO'draw.it:. After the mail had passed, the up train kit the Ormondville Sta.tioo > but as the' carriages were traversing the, points, which were apparently split, one or two of them left the track. The speed of; the train, was not great, but was quite sufficient to cause one carriage to top-". pie over. This would have caused the, remaining carriage to i'alJ also had it not been for the timely snapping of the couplings. These carriages contained many women and children. The occapants of the overturned car—four in all -—managed to get clear in time, and beyond a severe shaking no harm befell ' them. The line was soon cleared, and ' the train was then cut in f,vo and the passengers brought oil to Napier, where , they arrived well up to tirao.
