SANE UNIONISM.
LONDON, July 4
Mr Hughes entertained trades union leaders at dinner in the Savoy Hotel, those present including Messrs Appleton, Havelock Wilson and Seddon. Mr Hughes wartolv denounced those who torpedoed the Labour party in Australia, those who advocated direct action and the rule of force, such as we had been fighting for the last, five years. Mr Hughes declared: "We must proceed on constitutional lines. There must ha- no class war, no going slow, but we must produce more and do the maximum work." All the speakers, including Sir Joseph Cook and Senator Pearce, advocated sane unionism. Senator Pearce indicated that the Coalition would continue through the period of reconstruction.
